A Valediction
We can – none of us
Know where we are going.
We can – all of us
Make plans, have hopes, have dreams.
We can – all of us
Work for our future.
We can – most of us
Know where we came from.
We can learn from the past --
Our past, collectively and individually.
We can use this knowledge to
Direct our paths, unknown, into the future.
But we cannot plan in perfection.
But we cannot fail to plan without impunity.
Even if our plans change.
So we plan, we hope, we dream.
And we work. And we learn. And we love.
And we learn to live.
